Isn't It Romantic?

Writer's picture: Carlee GoodrumCarlee Goodrum

Hey everyone! I hope everyone who hates Valentine's survived and are back to their regular schedule. I personally had a pretty romantic night. That's right folks, I had dinner with my parents and then watched Incredibles 2. Try beating that! Anyway... besides that I got to see a pretty good movie, Isn't It Romantic starring Rebel Wilson AKA the best part of the Pitch Perfect trilogy. Who did I see this lovely film with you may be asking? Yup I forced my dad to go to another film with me! He loves me so much. Well enough of my babbling, let's get on to the review. LET'S BEGIN.

PLOT:

Natalie (Rebel Wilson) is pretty skeptical about love. She often feels invisible, her life isn't perfect, she's lives in a pretty crummy apartment, she works in a pretty shabby office as an architect where she's afraid to share her ideas even when they're great, that's just life for her. Two highlights in her life are her best friend, Josh (Adam Devine) and her romantic comedy obsessed assistant, Whitney (Betty Gilpin). One day at work Whitney is watching a romantic comedy at work and going on about how great they are and how they make you believe in love. Well Natalie has different views on this genre of film. She believes they are a total lie and are ridiculous, they set up unreal expectations about love.

On the way home from work, Natalie gets mugged in the subway and runs head first into a pole, knocking her unconscious. When she wakes up she finds herself transported into the world of the thing she hates, a romantic comedy. In this world she has a handsome suitor (Liam Hemsworth), the perfect apartment, the perfect job, really everything she fears. She's also afraid she's losing her best friend in this world because he too has a romantic interest, Isabella (Priyanka Chopra). Can she escape this world that she hates or will she have to learn to accept it?

REVIEW:

I was pretty excited about this film. One because I love Rebel Wilson but I'm also kind of a sucker for a great romantic comedy... I know you're shocked (maybe? I don't actually know what you're feeling). I liked this movie. I didn't love it but I really liked it. It was a bit slow at the beginning, like it couldn't find it's pacing at the start. It still had some great moments and I did laugh a few times but to me the second half of the film was much stronger.

The performances were all pretty strong. Rebel Wilson shines like always getting the most laughs out of me. She's just a movie star, she can hold the screen and can really carry the story. This was her first starring role, she mostly plays a supporting character, and I thought she did a fantastic job. I look forward to more movies where she's the lead. I also loved that Adam Devine was in it as well because his and Rebel's chemistry and comedic timing with one another is perfect. They have such a great back and forth with one another. The weak link for me in this movie was Liam Hemsworth. I don't know if I'm just being biased because I love Chris so much but he just didn't quite the hit the mark for me. It often felt like he was trying too hard to be funny, like it didn't come naturally to him. He had some funny moments but overall he was probably the least funny person in the cast. Overall though I thought the cast did a great job.

The music in this movie was pretty fantastic, I'm not going to lie. They used all the cliche songs from our favorite rom-coms but that's what made it so perfect. They also had not one but two amazing song and dance numbers that had me rolling. They were so funny and they really sold the movie for me. Of course Rebel and Adam had to sing. I mean they did Pitch Perfect together (one of the greatest movies of all time... don't judge me if you disagree, but if you do agree, kudos).

Overall I did enjoy this film quite a bit. There were some weak points in the film and it did seem a bit slow at first, but overall it was very enjoyable and funny. I did laugh more than I expected and they had some pretty good jokes. Again Rebel Wilson is just always a delight to watch and this performance was no different. This is definitely a film I will watch again.

PARENT'S GUIDE:

This film is rated PG-13. There is some cussing and there is one use of the f-word. There is also some sexual references and talk but nothing is seen.

OVERALL RATING:

For this film I will give it a...

Isn't It Romantic?: 7/10

I liked this film a lot but there were definitely some weak spots that could have made the film much stronger. I enjoyed the performances and overall thought it was a pretty good flick.

CONCLUSION:

Well there ya have it folks, another review done! I hope you enjoyed reading this little review of mine. As always thank you so, so much for visiting and be sure to leave me a comment or suggestion. Tell your friends! Until next time!
