Adrift

Ahoy mateys! Sorry that was a bad ship joke. Today I will be reviewing Adrift starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin. I really enjoyed this movie. It was pretty tense at times but it also had some nice personal moments between the two main characters. The cast is very small in this movie, the brunt of it being held up by Woodley and Claflin. They both did a great job in this movie and really kept the audience engaged. But I don't want to get too ahead of myself so... LET THE FUN BEGIN!

PLOT:

Adrift tells the true story of Tami Oldham played by Shailene Woodley and Richard Sharp played by Sam Claflin. Both are sailors who just want to travel the world. Richard having built his own ship sails wherever life takes him whereas Tami works on different shipping vessels to see the world. They both meet in Tahiti where they have an instant connection. One day they run into some of Richard's old friends who offer them a job to sail their boat to San Diego. Tami and Richard agree to this job because a substantial amount of money is offered to fund their future ventures.

They set sail and have smooth sailing for the first few weeks until they run into a deadly hurricane, Hurricane Raymond. They get caught up in the storm and both are badly injured along with the boat being nearly destroyed. This movie tells the story of their survival in the middle of the ocean with little food, little water, and only each other to rely on.

The movie opens with Tami in the cabin of the boat unconscious, having sustained a major head injury. She is lost and disoriented, not knowing what happened. She soon comes to her senses and immediately starts to look for Richard. She makes her way to the top of the boat and screams for him. She begins to lose hope when there is no response and no sight of him. She then soon sees the dingy floating a couple of miles out with Richard clinging to it. She gets him to the boat and discovers he has a shattered leg along with broken ribs. With this revelation she realizes that she will have to do the navigating and try to keep the boat afloat all while caring for Richard. The film goes back and forth in time to before the storm and after, that way the audience gets a deeper look into their relationship and how they ended up in the eye of the storm.

That's all I'm going to tell you about the plot because I don't want to give anything else away although it is a true story so if you really want to know, you can just read that. Anyway... ONWARDS AND UPWARDS (well downwards because you're scrolling down...but you get the point)

REVIEW:

So as I said before, I really enjoyed this movie. It was quite tense at times which is to be expected with it being a survival movie but it was also emotional and intimate. We as an audience really got to see into these characters and their relationship. The film mainly focuses on Woodley's Tami and Claflin's Richard. In fact, in the opening credits they're the only two names listed as the cast so the weight of the movie is carried on their shoulders. Thankfully both of them do a fantastic job in this movie and make it look effortless.

Shailene Woodley's performance really stood out to me. She was able to capture this tough-as-nails woman who's trying to survive but also be so vulnerable and open at the same time. Her most beautiful moments to me, ironically, were the moments when she broke down either to exhaustion, terror, or despair. We feel what she feels and that's greatly in part to Shailene's performance. There was one scene in particular that really stood out to me. In this scene she's sitting on the boat just taking a moment, meditating, gathering her thoughts. They show her face and she has this peaceful look which is such a contrast to the situation she's in. Her boat is trashed around her, her fiance is laying with broken ribs, she's dehydrated probably hallucinating but she looks calm. It then starts to rain and she opens her eyes and smiles. She stands up screaming out of excitement. This moment was so beautiful to me because despite this horrible situation and these dyer circumstances, you can see there is a fight in her, a will to live.

The movie did a really nice job of showing their lives both before and after the storm because it allowed us to get invested in their story and in them. We want them to survive, we are anxious to know what happens to them. You get invested in their love story and you essentially feel what they feel. That's not to say there aren't some tense moments because let me tell you, this movie gets intense. I saw it with my mom and she's very hands on when it comes to watching a movie, as in she'll tell you how she feels. She often reached for my hand or would squeeze my arm because she got so nervous. So fair warning, this movie will have you sitting on the edge of your seat at times. That's what makes this movie so great though, the balance between these intense, sometimes scary moments and these beautiful, intimate moments with the characters.

As said before, this movie is based on a true story. I had no prior knowledge of this story before I saw this movie, so I went in not knowing what to expect. There is a twist towards the end of the movie that I didn't see coming but it really brought the film full circle and explained a lot. Now I love a good twist in films so I enjoyed it. I don't know how you typically feel about plot twists but this one was really well done and like I said it really explained things. I'm not going to tell you what it is so don't get your hopes up but again it is based on a true story so if you're curious or like to ruin good plot twists you can look it up.

Overall I give this movie a very high rating and I highly recommend it to anyone. It's a great love story and survival story. It really shows how strong a person can be if they just have faith, love, and determination. It's amazing what one can accomplish when the odds are stacked against them.

PARENTS GUIDE:

There is a scene that shows brief, female nudity but not much is seen. There's no violence in this movie, although there is some blood. Tami has a pretty nasty cut on her head and there is a scene where she sews it together so if you're squeamish you might want to look away at this part. We also see Richard's shattered leg which is pretty gnarly and his broken ribs but other than that there's not too much more. There is a little bit of language but not much. This film is rated PG-13 so parents feel free to decide whether you'd like your kiddo to see this.

I hoped you enjoyed this review and I hope you'll check out this movie! Like I said multiple times, it's really good. Thanks for visiting my blog and taking the time to read this. Make sure to leave me a comment or movie suggestion. Please share with your friends or your enemies... really whoever you feel is best. I'm good with either one. This marks the end of this long, drawn out conclusion so...
