So as promised I've got another review for you this week! Hooray! Try to contain your excitement, it's too much. Today I'll be reviewing the new movie, Bohemian Rhapsody. Before we get started I have a question for you all. Is this the real life or is this just fantasy? (That's a line from the Queen song, Bohemian Rhapsody in case you didn't know but of course you know that otherwise why would you be here?). LET'S GET STARTED.

PLOT:

This film tells the story of the legendary band Queen and how they got their start. It mainly focuses on Queen's lead singer, Freddie Mercury who was well regarded in the public eye but had many troubles in his personal life. Farrokh Bulsara (Freddie's original name before he legally changed it) always wanted to be a star. He always stood out compared to his family with his eccentricities. He went out every night to a club where a local band would play. One night the lead singer of that band quit and they were left without a lead singer. This is where Freddie stepped in. He sang them a chorus from one of their songs and the band was formed.

The film then follows them on their journey from how they got the name Queen to their early days as a band all the way to the Live Aid concert in 1985. We see their ups and their downs, their struggles, their successes all while diving into the life of Freddie and his struggles. The film shows Freddie in regards to the public, in his relationships, and his personal struggle of who he was as a person.

REVIEW:

As I'm sure many of you are, I am a huge Queen fan. I've loved them for as long as I can remember. I mean honestly how could you not? They have so many hits from Killer Queen to Bohemian Rhapsody to We Are the Champions and that's just naming a few! Let me tell you this film provides the music. It has all the hits we love and shows how many of them came into existence.

Let's start with the performances. You can't talk about this movie and not mention Rami Malek as Freddie. This guy is amazing. I think he'll be nominated for an Oscar for sure. He does such a great job of capturing Freddie's different personas from his public lifestyle to his personal struggles. He really shows how fame can affect a person and change their perspective of who they are. Rami really holds the screen and does such a great job in his performance which had to be daunting because Freddie Mercury is such an iconic person. He's so emotional both in his interactions with the other characters and in his musical performances. Sure he lip syncs to the songs but he does it so well and with such passion you don't even notice. I mean come on you can't recreate Freddie's voice.

Let's talk about the songs, the reason I'm sure many of you are here today. Like I said before this movie provides with the music. It has all the hits we know and love so don't worry. I loved how they incorporated each song, some just used as background music, some used to show how a song was created or thought of, and others just performances. One of my favorite scenes was when they created the song Bohemian Rhapsody. It was so fun to watch them create the different sounds and come up with this unique piece of music. I also loved that it showed them fighting for it to be the single off that album because this may surprise some of you but this song wasn't well received when it first came out despite its status today. It was just a really neat sequence and really showed how passionate these men were about their music and their sound.

I'd also like to mention the cinematography, something I keep mentioning more and more in recent blogs. This movie is shot beautifully from the musical performances to the intimate character interactions. It just enhances the cinematic experience. This movie should be seen in a theater. It's one of those movies that was created for a theater experience, with the big screen, the sound, the audience. Some movies you can skip and just wait to watch it at home but you really need to see this one on the big screen.

PARENTS GUIDE:

This film is rated PG-13 but there is some cussing and some sensual situations. There is some drug and alcohol use. I mean this film is depicting a rock band and specifically a rock star's life so expect everything that comes with that.

OVERALL RATING:

For this film I will give it a...

Bohemian Rhapsody: 8/10

I really enjoyed this movie and as a huge fan of Queen I was very pleased. I loved the acting, the music, the cinematography, etc. There were some scenes I could have done without but otherwise this was a pretty fantastic movie.

CONCLUSION:

Well there ya have it folks! Another bites the dust (another Queen reference for you)! I hope you enjoyed this little review of mine and as always please leave me a comment or suggestion. Tell your friends! P.S. As a fun little reader interaction I'd love to know your favorite Queen song so make sure to let me know! Until next time!
