Ocean's 8

Hello friends!! Today I'm going to be reviewing my most anticipated movie of the summer, Ocean's 8. I can't tell you how long I have waited for this movie to come out. As soon as I heard it was going to be a thing, I started counting down the days. It only got better and more exciting when they released the cast. Let me tell you this cast is fantastic! But we've got some stuff to cover first so... LET'S GET TO IT.

PLOT:

Debbie Ocean played by Sandra Bullock is the brother of Danny Ocean (George Clooney's character in the Ocean's trilogy). She has just been released from prison and is already ready to pull of another heist. I mean she has had 5 years, 8 months, and 12 days to prepare for it so why not? The heist? Stealing a $150,000,000 necklace from the most exclusive party ever, the Met Gala. To do this though she needs a crew. That's where her lifetime friend and partner, Lou (Cate Blanchett) comes in. Now Lou is a bit hesitant at first but then again who wouldn't be but she ultimately trusts Debbie so she agrees. Debbie says that they'll need 7 people in total to pull off this heist. Well she's got two down (counting herself), she needs five to go.

To steal this necklace they need someone to be wearing it because it's currently locked in a vault 5 feet underground. That's where Rose (Helena Bonham Carter) comes in. She is a fashion designer and she will be dressing Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway) who just happens to be hosting the Met Gala and is the one person Cartier will lend the necklace to. They also need a hacker to see into the Met so they can make sure none of them get caught. Nine Ball (Rihanna) is just the person they're looking for. That's four down, three to go. They also need someone who's got quick hands, that can go undetected. Constance (Awkwafina) is a low rent pickpocket who does most of her heists on the streets, ready to move on to the big time. Amita (Mindy Kaling) is a jeweler who lives with her mother who Debbie hires because they need someone who knows diamonds and knows how to make jewelry. That only leaves one more person. Tammy (Sarah Paulson) is a suburban mom who's gotten out of the con life but Debbie knows how to reel her back in. Tammy is what they call a fence, the middleman between the thieves and the ones being stolen from.

Now that she has her crew they set off on one of the biggest heists ever. What transpires is a fun adventure with twists and turns. You never know what's going to happen or if they're going to succeed but you have fun trying to figure it out. That's all I'm going to tell you about that because if I told you more what would be the point of going? Trust me you don't want to miss this one.

REVIEW:

Now I may be a bit biased but I absolutely loved this movie. I was already a fan of the previous Ocean's movies but when I heard they were doing an all female Ocean's movie, I couldn't contain my excitement. I mean first of all, look at this cast. You've got Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett (the queen), Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna. The amount of talent in this movie is crazy. You've got comedians, music royalty, television royalty, all the way up to Oscar winners. I was really excited about this cast but I wasn't sure how they were going to work together. Let me tell you, it works, it really, really works. They all flow and bounce off each other so nicely. They all have such great chemistry which can either make or break a film. They all seem like they've been friends for years even though in the movie, for most of them this is the first time they've ever met.

One thing I really enjoyed about this film was that Anne Hathaway didn't play her typical character. You know the one... where she's all sweet and innocent and she always seems to cry. This role is the total opposite of that. She does so good in this role and is so unexpectedly funny, I hope she does more roles like this in the future. It's just not what you picture or expect from her because we all have this preconceived picture of what she's going to be like. It was a refreshing and often hilarious change. Everyone in this movie really got their chance to show off their comedic chops which was nice to see from the actors we're used to taking serious roles such as Cate Blanchett or Sarah Paulson.

One person who really stood out to me was Awkwafina who played Constance. She's relatively unknown in the acting world, being most known for her music. I think after this film she'll have more roles coming her way. She was one of the funniest characters in the movie and really had great comedic moments.

To say this movie is fun is an understatement. It's a ride from start to finish. Although you only briefly meet each character before they all come together, you really get a sense of who they are and connect with them. I really hope there will be more movies after this one so we can get to know these characters even better. I liked this movie because I love movies where you have to figure things out, where you're not really sure if what you're being shown is what's actually happening. This movie keeps you guessing and there are plot twists everywhere which if you know me, I love plot twists.

The thing I loved most about this movie was the girl power. We're given not one, not two, BUT eight strong female leads. That's almost unheard of in Hollywood films. They all play a vital role and each have such great moments in this movie. They're all hilarious and really get their chance to shine individually as well as within the group. I would personally love to be in this crew. In interviews many of the cast said that everyone expected them to not get along and have petty cat fights over little things but they only had wonderful things to say about each other. They said they became like a little family on set which is evident when you watch them on screen. This movie proves that women can lead a film and it will be successful. In fact, this movie had the biggest opening weekend of any of the Ocean's movies. This just proves that movies led by women make money. So let's get more made!

I hope with the success of this movie that there will be more in this series because I don't want it to end with just one movie. I will personally volunteer to be the ninth member.

PARENT'S GUIDE:

There is some cussing in this movie with one usage of the f-word. There is also a scene of implied sexy times where Hathaway's character handcuffs a man to his bed but nothing is seen. There's no violence or blood. This movie is rated PG-13 so it's up to you, parentals, whether you want your kid to see this movie.

CONCLUSION:

So as you can see I highly recommend this movie. It's a fun, summer movie that showcases some of the best in the business. If you like heist movies with some good ol' plot twists, check this one out. Even if you don't particularly like heist movies but you like fun, easy-breezy movies, check this one out. If you like movies where the cast is predominately female, see this movie. If you want more movies where the cast is predominately female, see this movie. I mean it has Cate Blanchett in it... what are you waiting for? GO SEE IT!
