Man oh man is it your lucky day? You get two blogs in one week (well depending on when you read them). I will be reviewing The Spy Who Dumped Me starring Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon. This comedy looked promising from the trailers because I laughed every time I saw them but I'll let you find out what I thought about this film, whether I liked it or not. So.... LET'S BEGIN!

PLOT:

This movie is about two dysfunctional friends, Audrey (Mila Kunis) and Morgan (Kate McKinnon) who get caught up in a crazy international adventure. Audrey unknowingly had been dating a spy (Justin Theroux) and when the people who are after him discover their connection they go after her too. Morgan being the ever faithful and reliable friend tags along. They travel the world trying to figure out who is after them and her now ex-boyfriend.

Along the way they meet CIA agent Sebastian (Sam Heughan) who agrees to help him because he too is trying to figure out who is after them. Craziness ensues which is expected when you put Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon together in a spy movie. They go around the world and even get to show off their action chops although they're maybe not the best.

REVIEW:

So as I said before I had high hopes for this movie because the trailer looked really funny and I'm a big fan of Kate McKinnon from SNL and other things she does. I was excited she got to be one of the leads in a comedy because I think she's hilarious. Unfortunately the movie wasn't nearly as funny as I thought it would be. It wasn't even that good of a movie either. All the funny bits were the ones I saw in the trailer which was a disappointment. Comedies really need to learn to save their best stuff for the actual film and not ruin it by putting all of them in the trailers.

The other comedic parts fell flat for me. I hardly laughed and it felt like they were trying too hard to land the jokes. The story also wasn't great. There didn't seem to be a plot or if there was one it flipped so often I didn't know their goal. It was just a movie of Kate McKinnon and Mila Kunis running around yelling and saying some bad jokes while trying to shoot a gun. Their characters didn't really have any depth to them. They tried to make us connect more with Mila's character by doing some flashback scenes of how she met Drew, her spy boyfriend, but the way they were executed and the material of them just weren't good enough to make me care about her. I didn't really care about any of the characters. They felt one-dimensional which I get it's a comedy but if you're going to put them in high risk situations we should feel something for these characters.

There was also a ton of cussing. It's expected for their to be cussing in comedies these days, it seems like it's unavoidable these days, but there was just way too much in this movie. Every other word seemed to be the f-word and it was so unnecessary. There are plenty of other ways to get your point across. This is my personal opinion but I just hate that comedies feel like they have to squeeze in as many cuss words as they possibly can because they think this is what makes a comedy so funny. After this film and so many other disappointing comedies I will definitely be more selective in the ones I choose to go see. It's a hit or miss these days, more times than not it's a miss. Comedy used to be one of my favorite genres of film but these days it's just lost its effect on me.

There was also a scene of unnecessary male nudity. Why do we need this in so many comedies? It's pointless and never funny. So many movies try to shock the audiences and there are successful ways of doing that, look at Gone Girl in the second act of the movie, the end of Seven starring Brad Pitt, the Sixth Sense, etc. I get that none of those examples are comedies but it is possible to shock the audience in a comedy without using nudity or language.

I know I've been harping on this film but there was one highlight and that was Kate McKinnon. When I did laugh which wasn't often, it was almost always because of her. Her facial expressions and her timing are really great. Although a lot of the jokes weren't funny or didn't land like they were supposed to she always seemed to make them work. I hope she does more film work whether it's comedy or not because I think she really is a good actress.

So as you can see I wasn't a huge fan of this one. Like I said before I will be more selective in the comedies I see from now on. I almost feel like PG-13 comedies are funnier than rated R comedies. Again that's my personal opinion and there is no judgement whatsoever if you like movies like this, I'm just not a fan.

PARENT'S GUIDE:

As I said before this movie has a ton of cussing and many usages of the f-word so be warned. There is also a scene of full male nudity. I didn't really talk about this but there is also quite a bit of violence and blood which is to be expected in a spy movie. This movie is rated R so it's probably not the best idea to bring your kiddos to this one.

CONCLUSION:

You probably guessed it but I wouldn't personally recommend this movie but if you still want to see it, you do you. I don't really have anything else to write, it seems I have run out of steam. Anyway as always thank you so much for taking the time to read this little blog of mine. Please make sure to leave me a comment or suggestion and tell your friends! I never do this but I actually know what I'm seeing next so the next blog will be about.... MEG. I love a good shark movie so I'm pretty pumped about this one. Stay tuned and I'll see you next time!
